FAQs about Dental Implants

Dental implants are today's premier tooth replacements. If you have lost one or more teeth due to decay, infection, accident, or gum dental implantsdisease, see The Dentists South Shore in Milwaukee. Their expertise will recreate a stable, natural-looking smile for you and dramatically improve your oral health.

What is a dental implant, and what does it do?

A dental implant is titanium device that replaces a natural tooth root. Your dentist surgically inserts the dental implant device at The Dentists South Shore in Milwaukee, and after appropriate healing, the implant is finished with a metal post and custom-made porcelain crown. Dental implants can anchor dentures and bridges, too, providing patients lacking some or all of their teeth superior appearance, bone health and oral function.

Can anyone get dental implants?

Healthy adults and young people whose jaws have finished growing usually can receive dental implants. Good oral and systemic health and sufficient bone in the jaw optimize favorable outcomes. Your dentist may advise bone grafting as needed.

Is the treatment process lengthy?

Consultation to the final restoration of a single-tooth implants takes several months. Healing cannot be rushed. That being said, the vast majority of implant procedures succeed, says the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness.

Will my body accept my implants?

Likely it will. Implants are crafted from biocompatible titanium. So rejection or allergy is extremely rare. In fact, implants are so strong and stable because human bone adheres to titanium exceptionally well. Scientists call the bonding process between bone and implant osseointegration.

How complex is the implant procedure?

It's an in-office surgery performed by one of our expert implant dentists. Time varies on the complexity of the case, but in general, patients receive their implants in one appointment and return to their normal activities the next day. Local anesthetic, or sometimes oral sedation, is needed during the procedure.

Are they difficult to care for?

Dental implants are no more difficult to care for than natural teeth. Brush twice daily, and floss every day to stay ahead of plaque and tartar. Additionally, people who wear implant-supported bridges or dentures need no adhesives or special soaks. Finally, if you are a smoker, you can increase the longevity of your dental implants by pursuing a tobacco cessation program with your primary care physician.

How long do dental implants last?

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry says implants stay in place last for decades. Truly, dental implants are "one and it's done" restorations.
