About the Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry

Do you fear trips to the dentist or experience general medical anxiety? If so, conscious sedation may be perfect for you. Conscious sedation dentistry can help reduce pain, discomfort, and anxiety during certain dental treatments. Dentists achieve this through certain medications that effectively promote calm and relaxation. Here at The Dentists South Shore, our dentists use oral conscious sedation for a more comfortable and relaxed dental experience in our Layton Ave. and Howell Ave. Milwaukee, WI, locations.

When is Oral Conscious Sedation Recommended?

Dentists usually recommend oral conscious sedation for individuals who experience panic, fear, or anxiety during complex dental treatments such as root canals or dental implant surgery. However, your dentist may also recommend it even for simpler dental procedures like routine cleanings or fillings if you’re severely anxious.

What’s The Oral Conscious Sedation Procedure Like?

Although the exact steps will differ according to the specific dental treatment you’re getting, you can generally expect the following steps during an oral conscious sedation procedure.

  • You’ll be given an oral pill that contains a drug such as triazolam or diazepam to induce relaxation. You’ll then wait for the pill to take effect, which is usually about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Your dentist will monitor your blood pressure and breathing. If you’re breathing is too shallow, you’ll be fitted with an oxygen mask just to ensure that your blood pressure is under control and that your breathing is consistent.
  • Once your dentist is certain that the pill has taken effect, your dentist in Milwaukee, WI, will begin the treatment. You may be under sedation for less than 30 minutes or a couple of hours depending on the extent of the dental procedure.
