Are You Keeping Good Oral Hygiene Habits?

Making sure your daily oral hygiene routine has all the necessary stages can make the difference between teeth that last a lifetime and poor dental health. Dr. Thomas Charapata, Dr. Christian Harteau, Dr. Michael Golovin and Dr. Cecilia Margraff are dentists at The Dentists South Shore, located in Milwaukee, WI. Below are some tips for maintaining good oral hygiene habits.

Healthy At-Home Oral Care

  • Take the time to brush: Regular brushing is your strongest defense against gum disease and tooth decay. Spend two minutes each morning and evening, slowly brushing all surfaces of your teeth. Use small circular motions and make sure you cover every tooth.
  • Don’t forget to floss: You can use a variety of flossing implements including a water flosser, floss picks, floss strips, and wax floss. It doesn’t matter too much which one you choose as long as you use them correctly. Flossing removes trapped food from between your teeth, preventing plaque from forming.
  • Rinse with mouthwash: Mouthwash is a valuable weapon n your arsenal against gum disease because it can kill oral bacteria and prevent it from reforming for several hours. As a bonus, it also keeps your breath fresh.
  • Make an appointment with your dentist: You can schedule advance dental appointments with one of our dentists so that you get a reminder when it’s time to come in for a check-up or cleaning.

Maintaining good oral hygiene habits now will help you avoid dental problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss later in life.
