What are the benefits of digital x-rays?

The Dentists South Shore use digital x-ray exclusively for many reasons. The amount of x-ray used in much smaller than normal dental x-rays. This means that our patients and staff are exposed to much less radiation. Our x-ray pictures are much larger and easier to read for the doctor, and the patient. Most of the time a problem with a tooth can be shown to the patient right on the computer screen.

The x-rays are developed almost instantly which saves you waiting time. We do not use any chemicals to develop film since there is no film. Therefore no chemicals are released into our environment which keeps Wisconsin clean and beautiful. If you need a copy of your x-ray, we can print them easily from the computer and keep them easily on the computer forever.

Why doesn’t my denture fit?

Most dentures don’t fit well. Even well-constructed dentures are a poor replacement for natural teeth. Denture wearers lose 70% of the force needed to chew when they lose their natural teeth. With today’s technology implants under a denture can restore the ability to chew gum, eat bagels and get your mouth functioning normally. There are many advantages to this denture base.

With age, your mouth might be drier than it used to be. Dry mouth can make it harder to wear dentures since tissue may not be able to support plastic gums.

Dental implants can lift the denture off the gum and relieve the pressure and sore spots.

I have missing teeth. What are my options?

Until recently, general dentistry has been able to offer partials or bridges which lock onto existing teeth. Dentures were the only alternative when all teeth were missing. These restorations all have their disadvantages.

We now have the ability to place dental implants in toothless areas and totally restore your smile. Dental implant placement includes putting artificial roots placed where you are missing teeth. They can replace a single tooth or many teeth, and they help prevent bone loss due to missing teeth. Having a full set of teeth beautifies your smile and helps you enjoy eating again without worry.

If I brush my teeth several times a day, why do I still have bad breath?

General bad breath is caused by the presence of bacteria and microorganisms in your mouth. Proper oral hygiene including brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day and flossing twice a day can help combat bad breath. Visits twice a year to your dentist for an exam and teeth cleaning are a couple bad breath cures. Only your dentist or dental hygienist can remove the tarter that may build up between cleanings. Excessive tarter is not only harmful to your gum tissue and bone, but it is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Are you experiencing chronic bad breath? We can help find the cause of bad breath and can recommend treatment. Come in for a free consultation. Call our office to set up an appointment.

When will my children lose their baby teeth?

When children reach 5-6 years old they will start to notice that their lower front teeth will become loose. These are usually the first to go. However, some children lose upper front teeth first. If a child turns 7, and hasn’t lost any teeth yet, we usually take x-rays of these areas to make sure development of adult teeth is proceeding normally. Girls tend to lose teeth 6-8 months ahead of boys.

By the time your child is 12 years old, most if not all of the baby teeth should be at least loose or gone. Sometimes we need to help the process along with removing a few of the last stragglers to assist normal spacing of the adult teeth. If your child is 13 and still has baby teeth, we recommend x-rays to check for normal growth of the adult teeth. If you have any questions about your child’s teeth come in for a free consultation.
